When you’ve been hurt so many times before, you’re inclined to think everyone is out to hurt you. You become increasingly suspicious of human motive and intention; especially when people seem “too good to be true”. What’s that saying? “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
People like to generalise and call it having “trust issues” but I disagree. There’s no law against being careful. And there’s no such thing as being “too careful”.
It’s so much easier to take the leap when you don’t know what lies on the other side. But after a fractured hand or two, anyone who isn’t stupid would think twice before jumping out of a moving car again. I’m not saying they won’t do it again altogether, but they will at the very least hesitate or take precautions…
Being screwed over opens your eyes to the reality that people WILL screw you over from time to time. That doesn’t mean you won’t trust anyone ever again. But as a wise man once said, “Trust, but verify.”
